Drum Sergeant Torgny Svaneberg will lead our drum corps from now
The band's autumn meeting elected a new drum sergeant, as Eugen Qvarnström wanted to return to the ranks after nine years on the post.
Furthermore Robert Wallgren and Mathias Cramér were given continued support as pipe majors of the grade 2 and grade 4 bands, respectively.
Drum Sergeant Torgny Svaneberg: At age four he sat up behind his older brother’s drumkit and Torgny’s life passion was sparked off. At ten he went with his brother Bjarne to a pipe band practice but was deemed too young to start playing with he band. This did not stop Torgny for a moment. He listened to records at home and learnt the rudiments from Bjarne and his passion for pipe band music grew stronger.
In 1988, at 16 years of age, he was admitted in the 1st Royal Engineers drum corps under D/Sgt Lars Östlund and in 1990 Torgny won his first prize. From then he has taken part in the band’s achievements, most notably the grade 3 victory at the 2001 World Championships.
Torgny spent 1999 in Ireland, leading the drum corps of a band that were All Ireland Champions that year and his Irish experiences have been a source of inspiration for his drumming ever since.
In 2007 Torgny was the first ever drummer to represent a Swedish band at the World Solo Drumming Championships in Glasgow.
